Fairy Tales: Reworkings & Obscurities

In light of my recent review of the film While She Was Out based on the fairy tale Little Red Riding Hood, I thought I'd compile a list of reworked and obscure film versions of various fairytales. Enjoy.

Cinderella

Ever After(1998) -Danielle, sole daughter of a deceased French nobleman, is raised - more as a servant than as a stepdaughter - by cruel and snobbish Rodmilla together with her own two daughters. One day, she accidentally meets Prince Henry, the future king of France. Starring: Drew Barrymore-Danielle, Anjelika Huston-wicked stepmother, Dougray Scott-Prince, Megan Dodds & Melanie Lynskey-stepsisters.

Poor Cinderella (1934)-
In her only color cartoon, Betty Boop goes to the ball thanks to the good fairy.

Hey Cinderella!(TV)(1969)-Jim Henson Muppet version

Little Red Riding Hood

While She Was Out (2008)-see my review below

Hoodwinked (2005)-
Animated re-telling. The satire begins where the fable last left off, as there's always more to every tale than meets the eye! Voiced by-Anne Hathaway-Red, Glenn Close-Granny, James Belushi-The Woodsman, Patrick Warburton-Wolf.

Snow White & The Seven Dwarfs

Sydney White (2007)-
modern retelling follows a college freshman as she pledges her late mother's once dignified sorority. But after discovering that today's sisterhood is not what it used to be, Sydney finds her new home away from home with seven outcasts. With the help of her socially challenged new friends, Sydney will take on the reigning campus queen. Starring: Amanda Bynes-Sydney, Sara Paxton-Rachel (Queen), Matt Long- (Tyler Prince), Jack Carpenter-Lenny (Sneezy), Danny Strong-Girken (Grumpy), Samm Levine-Spanky (Happy), Arnie Pantoja-George (Dopey).

Snow White: A Tale of Terror (TV) (1997)-
Based more authentically on the Grimm Brothers' story of a young woman who is unliked by her stepmother, the film includes the talking mirror, a poisoned apple, and some ruffian gold (not diamond) miners (not dwarfs). It takes place at the time of the Crusades. Starring: Sigourney Weaver-Lady Claudia Hoffman (Evil Queen), Monica Keena- Lilly Hoffman (Snow), Gil Bellows-Will (dwarf), David Conrad-

Peter Gutenberg

(Prince).
