Food for Thought: Thanksgiving & Foodie Films

Thanksgiving Movies
Son in Law (1993)
1993-Comedy-Plot: Sweet home town girl meets Shore her freshman year at college in the big city. She's changed fast & wants to go home for Thanksgiving showing of her new image with Shore in tow. It does deal with coming home for Thanksgiving from the big city. This is one of the few Pauly Shore movies I can stand thanks to an awesome 90's fashion makeover, the charming Carla Gugino, and the occasionally sweet Shore.

The House of Yes (1997)1997 Dark Comedy
Plot: An estranged brother returns home for Thanksgiving with a surprise fiance, much to the chagrin of his mother & crazy Jackie O obsessed twin sister.
Parker Posey at her best. Intelligent, hilarious & inappropriate with an amazing cast. Even Tori Spelling is amazing.

Pieces of April (2003)2003 Comedy
Plot: The bad seed of the family (Holmes) wants to prove her new found adulthood by cooking her family Thanksgiving meal. Everything goes wrong.
This is the oft rare indie comedy without a depressing ending.

The Ice Storm (1997)1997 Drama
Plot: Set in 1970's suburbia, 2 dysfunctional families decide to have Thanksgiving together and all their secrets come out.
This is a haunting, beautifully acted film directed by the acclaimed Ang Lee. Sometimes hard to watch, but ultimately thought-provoking and sometimes inappropriately funny.

planes-trains-automobiles-original1993 Comedy
ADDAMS FAMILY VALUES.
Plot: Morticia gets pregnant and Uncle Fester marries a black widow.
Black Widow (Joan Cusack) sends Pugsley & Wed off to summer camp to get rid of them. My favorite scene of this surprisingly superior sequel is the Thanksgiving pageant, where Wednesday Addams (Christina Ricci) plays a vengeful Native American who decides to go off script. Won't give anything away.

planes-trains-automobiles-original2001
Plot:  Depressed man (Keanu Reeves) is referred to a very special woman (Charlize Theron) who takes a month to "nurse" anyone back to mental health. This is November.
Super sappy, but somehow I remember liking it.

1973 Animated
Plot: Join Charlie Brown and the Peanuts gang for this Thanksgiving double feature. In A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving, Chuck tries to host a traditional holiday feast. In the Mayflower Voyagers, the Peanuts reenact the first Thanksgiving. In the Emmy-winning first feature, dinner turns into a disaster when clueless Snoopy and Woodstock serve toast and popcorn as the main dish, but Marcie steps in and saves the holiday.
I love the Peanuts & I love Snoopy. Nuff said.

Tower-heist-movie-poster-hi-res-01-405x600.jpg2011 Comedy
Tower Heist follows Josh (Ben Stiller), Charlie (Casey Affleck) and Enrique Dev'reaux (Michael Peña), employees of an exclusive apartment building who lose their pensions in the Ponzi scheme of Wall Street businessman Arthur Shaw (Alan Alda). The group enlist the aid of criminal Slide (Eddie Murphy), bankrupt businessman Mr. Fitzhugh (Matthew Broderick) and another employee of the apartment building, Odessa (Gabourey Sidibe), to break into Shaw's apartment and steal back their money while avoiding the FBI agent in charge of his case, Claire Denham (Téa Leoni). So why is this a Thanksgiving movie? Because a court hearing for Shaw has been scheduled for Thanksgiving during the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade to avoid publicity, and Shaw will go free. Josh and his team decide to break into Shaw's apartment during the parade.

This Oscar winning animated film had culinary moments so appetizing looking, I wanted to jump in the screen and eat, Paris looked stunning, & it had some of the best voice over work by big name actors & not voice over artists I've heard in quite awhile.

Plot: A woman and her daughter open a chocolate shop in a small French village that shakes up the community.
Director: Lasse Hallström
Stars: Juliette BinocheJudi DenchAlfred MolinaCarrie-Anne Moss
I've heard it takes 40lbs of chocolate to re-create to euphoric feeling of love. Since that would probably kill you, why don't you watch this film & the chocolate in it do that instead.

Plot: The most delicious event since macaroni met cheese. Inspired by the beloved children's book, the film focuses on a town where food falls from the sky like rain.

Director: Mel Stuart
Stars: Gene WilderJack AlbertsonPeter OstrumRoy Kinnear

Plot: Young employees at Shenaniganz restaurant collectively stave off boredom and adulthood with their antics.
Director: Rob McKittrick

Image of My Best Friend's Wedding1997 Romantic Comedy
Plot: Jules (Julia Roberts) tries to stop the upcoming nuptials of her best guy friend before he marries preppy Kimberly (Cameron Diaz)
Wedding movies always have food, there's the cake, the drunken karaoke bar sequences, the singing lobsters at the brunch. You know, the usual. This movie also happens to have the main character as a food critic. Oh should I ever be so blessed?

Image of The Last Supper1995 Dark Comedy
A group of idealistic, but frustrated, liberals succumb to the temptation of murdering right wing pundits for their political beliefs.
Director: Stacy Title
Stars: Cameron DiazRon EldardAnnabeth GishJonathan Penner
Politics aside, this movie is funny and everyone's head goes face first into their food. I know I've done that for different reasons.

The three friends promise to each other that not even money can bring them apart.
Director: Felix O. Adlon
Stars: Christian OliverPamela AdlonLaura San GiacomoJohn Craig
This is one of those great under-dog movies where the cute, quirky but imperfect girl (I used to see myself in all those characters. Heck I still do but I got the guy to watch them with now) where the she gets the hot guy in the end and he can cook.

Image of Super Size Me2004 Documentary
Plot: While examining the influence of the fast food industry, Morgan Spurlock personally explores the consequences on his health of a diet of solely McDonald's food for one month. (100 mins.)
Director: Morgan Spurlock
Stars: Morgan SpurlockDaryl IsaacsLisa GanjhuStephen Siegel
Guaranteed to make you vomit in your mouth a little every time you so much as see those double arches. That is, if you haven't already. This documentary is funny, informative, and makes you think more about what you put into your body and how that can effect your life. I must confess though-I still go to McD's for the coffee, sweet tea, and an occasional parfait or even ahem Bic Mac. It's my McD weakness. I'm sorry. It's the secret sauce (thousand island dressing I know). But I can cut up onions that tiny. It's those too. Damn you Big Mac.

Stars: Tom ColicchioPadma LakshmiGail Simmons,

Thanksgiving & Foodie Films Currently in theaters
planes-trains-automobiles-original2013 Animated
I can't vouch for this one yet, but why a computer-animated Thanksgiving movie has taken this long to be made is kind of shocking. Let's hope it's not a turkey. Word play - yes!

I wanna steal Kerry's dress so bad. So freaking cute. In certain light, I like Heidi's dress cuz it looks bronze. It other light it looks green which makes me not like it. Nina please wear a dress. That's cute, but this is the finale. Step it up.

Not so crazy about Tim's paisley on plaid. He's usually spot on when mixing prints. He's not here.

Tim I love the plaid as always. I want to buy those shoes for my hubby. Brandon, if it weren't for those shoes this outfit would be soo boring.

You can't out cute wedge booties with your workout attire & think you've saved the outfit. You haven't. Save it for the gym.
Project Runway Season 12 Alexandria von Bromssen Episode 14 Photos
This is one of her many pieces from her massive collection that she nixed. Good thing. That looks like a little girl's nightgown & gym capris. Did you get all your kids at the camp to do the sewing for you or something? You made soo many pieces.

I love the bow tie & pink shirt, but the texture in that suit makes it look old.
Project Runway Season 12 Episode 14 Photos
Really cute if it were either belted or used as a beach coverup.

Alexandria-Inspiration: Neo Nomadic Punk

Unconventional: Phone books. Stunning. Such an amazing attention to detail and sewing skills. I hate the hats & headpieces however.

She also made all the headpieces & hats-well she got her kids at the camp to help. Does that count as child labor? lol jk. A bit too simple and not really designed. I'm so sick of capris. I want to burn all capris in the entire world.

I like the cutout in that back of the tank. I think it's unusually done, but that vest looks so cheap. It looks like that rubbery/plastic stuff that comes in shipping boxes when you order electronics online.

This outfit & jewelry piece is pretty chic, aside from the hat which looks like a Burger King cardboard crown cover in feathers with a bill attached.

I like the top half, but I'm not sure who can wear that color. The bottom half is weird. Capris. Grrrr. Weird asymmetrical button tab which makes it look like your hiding something big in there. ;)

Tide Machine Washable Look
She did have 1 look in color. It was purple- vest, top & pants. That's the only thing that bothered me with her collection. Most of the looks were the same 3 pieces- similar pant with similar top with similar vest/jacket. Not enough variation. A collection needs to look like it came out of the same woman's closet. If a woman had that many pairs of the same pants & tops she'd be on what not to wear. In fact it kinda reminds me of the Beryl episode. I still appreciate her aesthetic & would wear some of her things.

Knowing me I'd put change in the right pocket & lose it.

Booty on the runway. She forgot to line this. Couldn't you get arrested for indecent exposure for wearing something like this? The vest would be cute if it wasn't cropped. I don't like it when vests are cropped below that waist. It does nothing for a woman's figure.

I love the material-a really soft leather that she made look airy & easy, but the tail in the back looks like a mistake.

I love this except for the weird slit in the back. I'd be showing cheek in that.

Bradon
Inspiration: First sign of Spring, specifically Crocus flower coming out of the snow.

I agree with Zac on this one. It would've been a better illustration of his inspiration if the skirt had been white cuz that top is a Crocus print. He hand painted the Crocus print.

Cohesive but others were not. I think any of his pieces that had the idea of Spring juxtaposed with more of a Winter harshness, like this floral print with the hard metallic & snowy white worked. The blue draped tide look & the blue tye dye dress didn't belong at all.

This doesn't belong. I get winter from the pants but the top in tribal print. Those pants are also butt ugly. They look cheap and ill-fitting.

If you're equating the metallic as not belonging in the collection then you don't really get the collection. The inspiration is the Crocus growing out of the snow. The metallic is like snow. I live in a very snowy area & am a florist as well in my day job so I get his inspiration to a t. The metallics work. What didn't belong were the blue draped things (the Tide look & the tye dye dress & the tribal print of the blouse of the previous look). For me though, on a personal level, I liked the shorts til I looked at the back. I'd like both of those pieces separately but not together.
Tide Machine Washable Look
Doesn't belong in his collection. It also looks unfinished. I'd be afraid to machine wash this too cuz I'd be afraid it would unravel.
People on the forums expressed that they thought the material of the jacket made the model look wide. I don't think it's the material. It's where the V stops. It meets the ruching in the sleeves which makes that whole section look wide with just a horizontal line b/t the 2 pieces imitating a princess seam in a dress which is usually not a flattering silhouette on anyone but a child. I do like the outfit itself though. It just needs to be pulled in the middle visually with a thicker tabbed waistband or longer arm length or just no ruching.
Unconventional Material Dress: Basket weave
This is beautifully done. It looks like a wearable, fabric dress. u could get away with wearing this in public and no one would know it wasn't fabric. Painting on basket weave it very difficult. The strokes of the painting look exquisite. No broken lines. I just wish it was a dress. It looks like a top & skirt.
Some of the forum ppl thought this looked old. I don't think it's old. I'd wear it, & I'm in my twenties. It's nearly see through. That's not old. My problem is that it doesn't go with the rest of the collection. If it had been in the same shade of purple as the Crocus print & ombred from the purple on top down to white then it would've made sense with the collection cuz it would've been an abstract interpretation of the Crocus coming out of the snow. But that random blue just didn't belong. The back also keeps it from looking old, but the hair style makes her look old (and bald) imo.
My favorite dress in the collection. I adore the seamless blending of these 2 different prints.
That gold is so cheap on a cute maxi dress that doesn't fit it his collection. That back sewing technique looks like back fat.

Dom
Inspiration: Blade Runner, The 1960's vision of the future
She designed all her prints. I love this-The print, the color, the styling, the clutch & the back is really cool. I've never seen that before.
I wanna steal this. I'm a little obsessed with jumpsuits. I wanna wear the jacket on a rainy day.
I like the print, but the double sleeves & high neckline make this look constricting while the back looks like it's about to fall off.
Beautiful and original. The only thing I don't like is the ruching on the back of the dress. It looks messy.
I like the print and the backside, but the front makes the model look wide. I think it's cuz the sleeves need to be cut a bit narrower.
The swimsuit has a great print, but the weird tan-lines the cut outs would give you and the unflattering fit makes this a throwaway pieces. I do like the cover-up though, and I appreciate her attempt at showing more variety in pieces.
I like both but not together. That dress is gorgeous. It's old school in cut with a very new shade of silver.
Yay for jumpsuits! I question the target on the butt though.
Tide Washable Fashion
Lol did you look at the back? Most women can't wear that. I don't judge clothing or design based on what the average woman can wear btw. I just mention it cuz someone on the forums said how it would flatter all types of women. Only a very fit woman can wear this. This girl is a bit thin so the back isn't flattering and makes her look boney. A larger woman wouldn't look good either. My very athletic sister would look amazing in this tho. Plus the hook in eye looks weird & cheap. I love it from the front though. I'd have to seriously tone up my shoulders and back to wear it.
Unconventional Materials-door hinges
Beautiful aside from the booty on the runway. Poor model. I'm glad she put this on the red head. It really pops with her hair.

Justin
Inspiration-Journey of a deaf man. The first 1/3 is being deaf for 18 yrs. The middle 1/3 is the chaos of hearing everything all at once after he got a cochlear implant. The last 1/3 is the peace he has made with it & his hearing.
This is the start of the "deaf" part of his collection. He made all the jewelry in the collection using 3D printing.  I love this from lips to toe. Though the hair is an improvement on the monk-tastic hair he had before, I think a blunt straight bang wouldn't looked modern & edgy but still normal and not crazy. She looks like she tried to trim her own bangs and sneezed.
Love. I wonder if the 3D printing will stay but it made on the runway so that shows promise. I love the pleated on this too.
Weird. Though I liker her hair. The proportions are off. The pants are too short and baggy, the top is too lose, and that lips in the back of the vest make it look like a woman's labia. Sorry I went there.
This is the chaotic part of his collection representing when he got his cochlear implant. Aside from the sound-wave print & the belt, I do not like this. I think the whole dress should've been in this print with the belt in th middle. It should be a dress too, not a top & skirt. The shape makes it look very Juniors.
This is perfect. The look before this should've been cut all together and just keep this.
Is this a top & pants. If so I hate it. If it's a jumpsuit I'd like it if he weren't for the splatter paint. It looks like the models with the splatter paint on the bottoms of their outfits jumped in mud puddles before the show or spilled their coffee on it like Bradon's model. The #D print doesn't fit wither. It's not jewelry. It's a print. It's supposed to be seamlessly introduced into the outfit. I like the vest just not styled with the rest of it.
Transition into being at peace with sound & his cochlear. Love the print & the whole look from the front. From the back, she looks like she wasn't painting her house and the drop cloth stuck to her clothes on the way out the door.
Stopping jumping around in the mud. All your clothes will get dirty.
I love this except for the length. Too short.
Inspired by his favorite sound, the sound of rain cuz the gown sounds like rain when it walks. Lose the print. It distracts from the beauty of the dress.

Overall thoughts
Yeah I wish Alexandria used more color. My problem with her aside from that, was the fact that if you look at her design portfolio before she was on PR RW, you will see most of her finale collection already in there. She repeated. This show is to make you grow. I think Dom did that. She usually used other ppl's prints other than the HP challenge so she did all her own prints for the finale, & she finally was able to marry her 2 design aesthetics together. She seems to have a penchant for the 70's-80's & for futuristic. Whenever she went forward I liked her things. Whenever she went backward I didn't. She married those 2 styles perfectly together in this collection. Bradon's wasn't a collection. Justin's was quite beautiful, but he needed to push himself to use color. He said he's afraid of color. Look at his life and all that he's accomplished? Is color really that scary compared to all that he's gone through? Plus he knows Nina loves color. Do 1 dress or something in a color you like as a designer that goes with your collection. If you don't have at least 1 item in a color you will not win cuz Nina won't give you a high score. If he had used color somewhere I would've said that Justin should win, but since he didn't Dom is the clear winner imo.
