Project Runway S11 Ep2 Spin Out Fashion Review

In case you missed it, this season is Pr RW Teams. But there is still only one winner. Not sure how that's gonna work out. This episode, the designers have to stay in the same teams as they did the 1st ep, which means the losing team from last week is one designer down. Their task? Apparently Susan Sarandon owns a trendy club called Spin Out. It's a ping pong social club. Yes, you read that right. The designers must design new uniforms for the waitstaff. That means 5 outfits: 3 women's waitress uniforms, 1 men's waiter uniform, &amp, 1 ball boy uniform. They all must also incorporate the club logo &/or slogan in them. The slogan is the best part. Quick! Think of a dirty catch phrase for a club built around ping pong!

If you thought of that, then congratulations, you and Susan Sarandon have equally dirty minds. Question: How do the straight male waiters feel about having to wear that slogan at work?  On to the fashion:

The Male Designers

I like to see what fashion designers wear. You can usually see what type of designer they are based on their personal style. Men first: This is a full group shot. I wanted this shot so I could see the overall looks. Benjamin-multi purple colored tee, basic khakis. Similar color scheme to his dress from last week. Matthew:  lime "in case you forgot he was a contestant" green. I know I sure did. Tu's basic black with some printed bottoms. James in boring pajama blue. Daniel in what looks like a boring blue shirt. You wouldn't be able to tell that he won last week based on what he's wearing this week, if it weren't for that villainous curly cue handlebar mustache. I can't see anyone else. Moving on.

Benjamin-I see you're wearing skinny khaki bottoms. Thant's a bit better. Tu-Those printed shorts look like swim shorts. Matthew-You paired your lime green tee with what looks like pajamas. Wait a minute? Did you and Tu just take off your pants to work as waiters. Are those actually your under roos? Project Runway Season 11 Episode 2 Photos
OK James, you're actually wearing a plain grey tee. Uggh no wonder you're dress last week was so boring. Matthew-OK so now I get you-lime tee, pajama/under roo short, chain necklace, teal wayfarers. Lose that Goodfellas chain & put some actual pants on & you got yourself an OK outfit.

What is up with all these men wearing ladies shorts? Daniel, I shouldn't be seeing that much your man legs.

Niceplaid shirt tho. Great contrasting plaid cuffs & collar.

Runway day!! Stanley- A standard green sweater over a button front does not convey your design aesthetic. Those hipster glasses are cool tho. I have some too.

See :)

Looks like someone got crafty. Did you tear that hear oof of a Hallmark card & Modge Podge it to your sweater vest. Those pants are actually man capris.

Joseph Aaronloves stripes this episode. Here he is in a Freddy Kruger sweater, camel khakis, and cool sneakers with a green sole. Richard- It's really hard to see how this could be the maker of the amazing dress last week. I'm very happy you don't design according ur own personal tastes cuz Yikes!

Tuis very basic. It fits his design aesthetic which is very Asian modern minimalist. Benjamin is looking very dapper in this designer version of a suit. Love skinny ties. Must get my hubby to start wearing them. Those treated to look like leather denim pants are amazing.

Matthewin a coral blazer & maroon pants with the brogue version of Joseph Aaron's sneakers. I love everything except the shoes. Great on their own tho. Love the coral blazer. I have one too. :)
James in your ever boring, humdrum brown suit

James this hat has some personality, but why do you continue wearing nothing but the colors of dirt? No wonder you have trouble picking colored fabrics. The royal blue of that scrapped tshirt haunts me. Joseph Aaron again in stripes & neutral bottoms. It's a casual version of what you wear on runway day.

Hello hipster glasses, please wear something with more personality.

Mr. coral blazer actually has a patterned purple top underneath it with some fabulous chains this time. All in all I'd wear the girl version of this outfit. Is this his design aesthetic then? Dandy outfits? Foreshadowing.

Female Designers

Full shot. Amanda stole some hooker fabric from Mood and tied it around her waist. Kate's dress is vaguely interesting, but not a good color for her.  I'm afraid the placement of that diamond design would be unflattering for the waistline.

On top of said hooker sarong we have a boring gray tee & really cool turquoise necklace. How that goes with leopard print idk.

Ugh are those biker shorts under those daisy dukes?

Blah shawl cardigan. Not surprising considering what she's been designing. I get the impression she's really not ready for this competition.

The back is a little better. Is it denim? Cuz if it is I change my mind
Brown sandals finish it off. I would think it wouldn't be a good idea to wear open toed shoes while working with needles.

Ill fitting grey dress with, again, some great turquoise jewelry that really showcases her heritage well.
Michelle's wearing an abstract tee reminiscent of Patricia's amazing dress from last week.
Cindy's wearing a brown shawl cardigan, the color of which does nothing for her & a ruffly purple top. Jewel tones are lovely on her.

Patricia decided to turn that horrible royal blue tshirt, that James chucked, into a vest. Kate's in something lacy that is way too close to her skin tone. Is color choice gonna be an issue for her this season?
Asian inspired very Phillip Lim white cocoon dress. Love it!!!

Hooker meets hippie meets go go dancer. Shorts might be cute on their own paired with a more simple top.
Michelle's in a cute but unflattering ruffly dress that doesn't seem to fit her personality or chest at all. Samantha in Kenley's light up outfit from all stars season 1. Strangely there's part of me that kinda likes it.  Cindy has some personality going on in that cute bird print top, but I wish that blazer was a little more saturated in color. It looks like it's been faded in the wash.
And are those slippers? I'm pretty sure I own those.

Michelle, love the lime green with the gray & white print top. Great color combo.

Judges & Mentors
Project Runway Season 11 Episode 2 Photos
Tim Gunn is wearing a ill fitting jacket with a dated looking tie, but I think those are colored pants so at least that's more of the Tim I know. Other guy, are those jeans or suit pants on the bottom? Either way it's bad.
J'adore Nina's top. Those little gems are amazing and so unique. I wish I had a better screen shot.

Heidi Klum in an olive (color I'm obsessed with) ill-fitting dress. I really wanna belt it. Also, what's with the lazy mom hair? We need a straightener stat! Those shoes are amazing though.

Susan Sarandon is like a fine wine. Keeps getting better with age. This is the best I've seen her look outside of a movie set in ages. Look at her look book on www.mylifetime.com in the Project Runway page to see what I mean. The fit is amazing on her hourglass shape and, that print is very chic.

Now on to the actual Designs. First is ....

Dream Team

Top Row: Michelle, Matthew, James
Bottom Row: Cindy, Tu, Samantha, Benjamin

Benjamin: top & Matthew: kilt & offensive slogan pouch. Remember that foreshadowing  moment from before? This kilt is proof. I expect more dandy outfits to come. Funny, but was he really expecting to win? What sporty man (they got meet the clients beforehand) would wear a kilt & unclassy double entendre on their man parts. Benjamin-Average man tank with ugly mesh. This is a ball boy uniform for a ping pong club not a fetish club.

Samantha: vest & Tu: dress
From the Lord & Taylor wall:
Silver Tone Pave Hinge Bangle Bracelet
MICHAEL KORS $145         Ash $195
This is supposed to be a waitress uniform. Like the shoes, but the Bracelet does not go with the sporty look. Boring skirt/dress with ill fitting vest & weird mesh again. The only good thing about this is the cutout.

James
Oh dear. Surfer dude. Not right for a NYC Ping Pong club. This is a waiter's outfit btw. Logo on back pocket flats is not only inappropriate, but they look like creepy googly eyes. What is up with all the inappropriate outfits? What kind of club do they think this is? Boring yet also strange tank top. No man should ever wear a tank unless he's playing a sport or doing manual labor. I'm also pretty sure that's a girls belt.

Benjamin: Shorts & Cindy: Jacket & Tank
The blazer is not as bad as what the judges said. I think the contrasting panelled sleeves & lapel make it more than an "off the rack" piece. The shorts are hideous. That crotch is strange, and are they high waisted too? That can work but not paired with that blazer. It needs cuffs to make it look interesting. It's not right for a waitress uniform. Can you imagine serving drinks in those heels? It would be good for the manager or maybe the hostess, but the challenge was for a waitress. You can't just make up your own rules.

Michelle
I feel so bad for her. Her outfit was amazing last week, but she was in the bottom team so she couldn't win. This outfit is great too. Really unique. Everything she's done so far has seemed fresh. I like the use of the logo, the styling is great, & I love olive, but I'm not sure it looks like a uniform. If you're making a cool uniform, it still has to look recognizable to the patrons at the club as a waitress uniform & not just a cool dress for a patron going to the club.

Team Keeping It Real

Top: Stanley, Richard, Amanda,  Joseph Aaron
Bottom Row: Kate, Layana, Patricia, Daniel

Stanley
This was a decent update. I really like that short-sleeved sweatshirt. It's something I've never seen before in menswear. However, I hate drop crotch pants as anything but lounge wear. It just looks messy.

Kate: top & skirtamp; Patricia: & leggings
The top is cute, but not for a waitress uniform, and where is the logo? I don't see it. I hate skirts & leggings. Only children should do that. I would've liked it better if that leather had been woven like that in the leggings instead. Lose the skirt.

Joseph Aaron: pants & Richard: top Both: harness
Love this! This is a ball boy uniform. The shirt is flattering for a man or woman,  is sporty, & graphic. The pants are the same. Perfect. That harness for their catchers is really clever.

Amanda
Too short for a waitress. Again, I don't see the logo. I like the skater shape. It's sporty, but nothing about this seems designed. Also, it's a swimsuit material. Cuz that's what I want out of my clothes. I wanna be able to leave work & jump directly in a swimming pool.

Daniel & Layana
It's the most uniformy out of all of the designs. It's practical. It fits well. But it's boring. That lapel swoop designed to look like the curve of the ping pong ball when it bounces (cheesy) looks dated and very 70's in a bad way. The scoop racer back in the vest could be cool they were both the same length. I like the placement of the logo. That skort is useful but butt ugly & sorry, Susan, not unique. I wore skorts in middle school.

Winning Team: Keeping It Real

Winner:

Layana
Daniel, who actually did all the work, graciously gave her the win, when asked by the judges who deserved it , because he already had immunity from last week.

Who I think should've won

Joseph Aaron or Richard. They worked well together so I can't decide who between them shoulda won.

Eliminated

James. Surprised? I'm not. Last week's boring outfit. Now this week he picks a royal blue cheer leading uniform fabric and makes an ugly tee which he then scraps and literally makes this tank out of scrap fabric. Bye Bye.

Who were your picks for Winner, & who do you think should've gone home? Comment below.
