Riddick Movie Review

Riddick (2013) Poster

Riddick  2013 Action Scifi Writer & Director: David Twohy based on characters created by Jim Wheat & Ken Wheat. Stars:   Review: Riddick-a man so bad ass he turns lesbians straight. 13 years after Pitch Black, 1 sequel (The Chronicles of Riddick), and one mortgage of Vin Diesel's house later, we have the third in the trilogy. Riddick starts 5 years after The Chronicles of Riddick ends. Riddick has been left for dead on the planet from Pitch Black and mercenaries are out to get him yet again. So it's basically Pitch Black meets TCoR. Does it work? It does in an entertaining, non-thinking scifi movie kinda way. It has a 3 layered story. 1st)He's the omega man on a desolate planet all by himself with the cutest alien puppy ever teaching himself how to be a bad ass again after being crowned the King of the Necromongers at the end of TCOR and going soft. That left him vulnerable enough to be left for dead cuz when you're king someone always wants your crown. 2nd) 2 different teams of mercenaries land to to collect a bounty on him. The teams clash as they try to find a way to work together in order to capture Riddick. 3) Those flying scorpion things from Pitch Black are still at that planet and start attacking people so they all have to band together if they want to survive. I liked that there was an actual layered plot structure to this movie. If it had just been about the creatures, then I could've saved myself the trip to the theatre and just rewatched Pitch Black. Also of note is the only female actress other than some naked women in the beginning of the movie. Katee Sackhoff was awesome in this movie playing a bad ass lesbian mercenary. After watching Selena Gomez in Getaway, I needed to watch a real kick-ass female performance. Best performance in the movie. Enjoy this film for what it is, and ignore a few CGI issues. Warning: Don't take your children to this movie unless you don't mind them seeing their first pairs of boobies (9 in total: 4 pairs & 1 courtesy of Sackhoff). There's also plenty of gore to have nightmares over. I say this because there were young children in the theatre with their parents when I went. All in all, the movie was entertaining with a stellar performance by Sackhoff, some oft bloody fighting sequences, and a very cute dog. Rating: Not the Brightest Crayon in the Box but Sure is Pretty. Watch with: Pitch Black & The Chronicles of Riddick.
