Getaway Movie Review

Getaway (2013) Poster

Getaway 2013 Action Director:  Writers:  &  Stars:   Plot: Former race-car driver Brent Magna (Hawke) is pitted against the clock when his wife (Rebecca Budig) is kidnapped by a mysterious villain. He commanders a young woman's (Gomez) car and takes her on on a high-speed race against time. Trailer Review: Selena Gomez is officially the world's most annoying side seat driver. Ethan Hawke, a former race car driver, is in a precarious situation. His wife's been kidnapped and a mysterious, ambiguously accented man tells him to steal a new Shelby Super Snake Mustang & do all this crazy race car shit or his wife dies. He steals the car-enter the most adorable carjacker who's ever lived-Selena Gomez in the most miscast role I've seen since KStew in Snow White & the Huntsmen. She's supposed to be this tough, intelligent, tech savvy chick, & she comes off like a dumb cartoon character. At times her lines were comedic even though it's supposed to be a high octane suspenseful scene which makes me think that maybe she thought she was on the set of the Are We There Yet? franchise. Other times, the camera would pan to her, & she looks like she doesn't realize someone said action. Acting is also reacting. Hawke is amazing as usual which is hard when you're acting across an adorable but clueless chipmunk. The movie isn't without merit, however. The premise is interestingv and the stunt work is amazing. None of it CGI BTW. It's all stunt work. 7 Shelby Mustangs (13 versions) had to die in order to make this movie. A moment of silence please----------- The  Shelby Super Snake Mustang is epic, and the 1st time director has real potential. There were some really interesting shots here including a crash that looked like it could only be done in one take. Note: Not all of the 42 cameras used on this set made it out alive. At times they used anywhere from 18-42 at once to get multiples angles. There's also an amazing POV car chase scene reminiscent of every cool car race video game ever made, but I've never scene it like this in a film before. By the end of the film, I felt like I watched a really cool, extra long car commercial which was fun, but Selena Gomez's underwhelming performance, the lack of real motive for the bad guy, and anti climactic ending makes this movie more style than substance. Rating: Not the brightest crayon in the box but sure  is pretty. Watch with: Nick of Time & Drive.
