50/50- 2011 3X Indie Spirit nominated Indie Dramedy Starring Indie Spirit nom Joseph Gordon-Levitt ((500) Days of Summer), Emmy nom Seth Rogen ("Da Ali G Show"), Oscar nom Anna Kendrick (Up in the Air), Bryce Dallas Howard (Hereafter), Oscar winner Anjelica Huston (Prizzi's Honor), Matt Frewer ("Eureka") & Lauren Miller (Zack and Miri Make a Porno). Written by Will Reiser & Directed by: Indie Spirit nom Jonathan Levine (The Wackness). Plot: Inspired by a true story, an otherwise healthy twentysomething (Gordon-Levitt) has a comically early midlife crisis when he gets slapped with a cancer diagnosis -- and a 50-50 chance of survival. Trailer: http://www.blockbuster.com/browse/catalog/movie/trailer/424786 Review: I've been looking forward to this movie for a while. It's on short wait on my queue. I blame the Golden Globes for that. Will update after I watch. Rating: TBD. Watch with: TBD.

Real Steel (2011) Oscar nominated Sci-Fi Sports film Starring: Emmy winner Hugh Jackman, 6X Saturn nom Evangeline Lilly ("Lost"), 2X Indie Spirit nom Anthony Mackie (The Hurt Locker), Saturn nom Kevin Durand ("Lost"), 2X Emmy nom Hope Davis (The Special Relationship (TV)), David Alan Basche (The Adjustment Bureau), Phil LaMarr ("State of Goergia") & James Rebhorn ("Homeland"). Written by: John Gatins (Hard Ball) based on the short story "Steel" by Richard Matheson. Directed by: Shawn Levy (Date Night). Plot: In a future world where flesh-and-blood boxers have been replaced by towering mechanized fighters, pugilist-turned-promoter Charlie Kenton (Jackman) reconnects with his estranged son, Max (Dakota Goyo), to convert a discarded machine into a World Robot Boxing contender. Trailer: http://www.blockbuster.com/browse/catalog/movie/trailer/464664 Review: I went with my hubby to see this, not expecting much. I didn't hate it. I found the sports aspect of it the most enjoyable. The relationship between the father & son was also quite good. The visuals were amazing. Completely deserving of its Oscar nod. However, the film never quite connected with me. I felt no emotional pull other than one fight scene a human is in. I think that's the inherit problem with this film. Humans aren't fighting. CGI robots are fighting. I cannot root for or connect with them. I have connected with a non-human before: Wall-e. So it's possible, but they didn't succeed here. The ending also kinda pissed me off as well. A big let down. It's not bad, but I'll never watch it again. Rating: Not the brightest crayon in the box, but sure is pretty. Watch with: Tron: Legacy.

Another Happy Day (2011) Sundance award winning Indie Drama Starring: Ellen Barkin (Operation: Endgame), Ezra Miller ("Royal Pains"), Oscar winner Ellen Burstyn (Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore), Indie Spirit winner Demi Moore (Margin Call), Oscar nom Thomas Haden Church (Sideways), Kate Bosworth (21), Siobhan Fallon ("The Whole Truth") & Oscar nom Diana Scarwid (Inside Moves). Written & Directed by: Sam Levinson (Operation: Endgame). Plot: Upper-crust family dysfunction takes center stage in this drama, which stars Barkin as a divorcée attending the highbrow wedding of the son she barely knows and trying to hold her own against a family that couches judgment in every smile. Trailer: http://www.blockbuster.com/browse/catalog/movie/trailer/507988 Review: I'm a fan of both wedding movies and ensemble pieces. Great cast. Hopefully it pans out. We'll see. Rating: TBD. Watch with: TBD.

The Whistleblower 2010 Political Thriller Starring: Oscar winner Rachel Weisz (The Constant Gardener), Camie award winner Vanessa Redgrave (The Locket (TV)), Monica Bellucci (The Passion of the Christ) & Emmy winner David Strathairn (Temple Grandin (TV)). Directed by: Larysa Kondracki. Written by: the director & Eilis Kirwan. Plot: A drama based on the experiences of Kathryn Bolkovac (Weisz), a Nebraska cop who served as a peacekeeper in post-war Bosnia and outed the U.N. for covering up a sex scandal. Trailer: http://www.blockbuster.com/browse/catalog/movie/trailer/513008 Review: This looks like an interesting and probably hard to watch movie. Rating: TBD. Watch w.: TBD.
