2016 Critics' Choice Awards Fashion Recap & Review: Best & Worst

My Criteria: If you are nominated or in a nominated film, then this is your night to shine, representing that film. Your outfit should reflect the film. Everyone else from Plus Ones to Presenters to Attendees should wear something chic & a bit more conservative for this particular awards show.

Nominees/Winners

Amy Schumer
Amy Schumer attends the 21st Annual Critics' Choice Awards at Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California, on Jan. 17, 2016.
Best Actress in a Comedy winner Amy Schumer (Trainwreck)
My take: I'm liking Amy's white theme she has going on this awards season. I've never seen her so well put together previously to this season. She wears white well, the fit on this is to die for, she posing right, I love the b&w pop of the clutch and her hair & makeup are pretty and flattering. I just don't find this dress fun enough for this girl. It;s a bit safe. She is anything but safe.

Rachel McAdams arrives at the 21st Annual Critics' Choice Awards at Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California, on Jan. 17, 2016.
BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS nominee Rachel McAdams (Spotlight)
My take: I really like this. The color is fantastic on her as is the matching lipstick. The belt is flattering and is, surprisingly, the neckline which h normally doesn't work on smaller bust gals. I also really like the chain straps on here. It gives is some edge which works for her role in Spotlight.
Kirsten Dunst attends the 21st Annual Critics' Choice Awards at Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California, on Jan. 17, 2016.
BEST ACTRESS IN A MOVIE MADE FOR TELEVISION OR LIMITED SERIES Kirsten Dunst ("Fargo")
My take: This is not a winner's dress. It doesn't fit the noir quality of Fargo nor have any edge whatsoever for an edgy show, the color is weird, and it's ill fitting. The shoes don't match either. Nothing good here.

Saoirse Ronan arrives at the 21st Annual Critics' Choice Awards at Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California, on Jan. 17, 2016.
Best Actress nominee Saoirse Ronan (Brooklyn)
My Take: Pretty, but I want an updo so I can see the strong shoulders of this gown.

<a href="http://www.wonderwall.com/tv/Melissa-McCarthy-1419.celebrity">Melissa McCarthy</a> attends the 21st Annual Critics' Choice Awards at Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California, on Jan. 17, 2016.
Best Actress in a Comedy nominee Melissa McCarthy (Spy)
My Take: Though a very pretty color for a red head and a vast improvement from the Hefty bag of another awards show, this doesn't quite work. The waist band & neckline are flattering, but the print doesn't work for the film, Spy, that she's nominated for nor for this awards show. It belongs at the Indie Spirit or Daytime Emmys or a Kids award show. That front scarf thing just adds bulk.
Helen Mirren arrives at the 21st Annual Critics' Choice Awards at Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California, on Jan. 17, 2016.
Best Supporting Actress Helen Mirren (Trumbo)
My Take: When you are in your 70's, fit & color are the most important things. The fit on this is amazing. Her hair, makeup and accessories are spot on. Because of the open neckline, the black doesn't look as harsh as it could for a woman of her age. Not crazy about the print for this awards show, but she still looks great. As I said, different rules if you're retirement age or older.
<a href="http://www.wonderwall.com/movies/Liv-Tyler-346.celebrity">Liv Tyler</a> attends the 21st Annual Critics' Choice Awards at Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California, on Jan. 17, 2016.
Liv Tyler ("The Leftovers")
My take: Though she wasn't nominated for a CCA, her show The Leftovers got 5 nominations. Is she pregnant? If she is then this dress is great. If not, it's creating a bump. Besides the fit, this dress is cool, moody,  & still sexy with that slit. I love her styling as well.
<a href="http://www.wonderwall.com/tv/Hayden-Panettiere-291.celebrity">Hayden Panettiere</a> arrives at the 21st Annual Critics' Choice Awards at Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California, on Jan. 17, 2016.
Best Actress TV Drama nominee Hayden Panettiere
My Take: Nashville Star CCA nominee looks like Grecian goddess. She is dangerously close to a nip slip. However, she just had a baby and got out of rehab for postpartum depression. She looks amazing and happy. Kudos for her for having the courage to get help.
Sarah Paulson attends the 21st Annual Critics' Choice Awards at Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California, on Jan. 17, 2016.
Best Supporting Made-TV Movie/Limited Series actress nominee Sarah Paulson ("AHS Hotel")
My take: Paulson looks pretty. It's like 1960s mod with an edge which matches the era-less feel of the hotel on her show. I like the hair up like that with high neckline. The makeup is nice. I'm just not a fan of whatever than trim is. It looks cheap.
Krysten Ritter arrives at the 21st Annual Critics' Choice Awards at Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California, on Jan. 17, 2016.
Best Actress TV Drama nominee Krysten Ritter ("Jennifer Jones")
My Take: This is perfection. It's memorable and fits the dark nature of her show. The color is divine, the cut is flattering, and the styling is complementary. One of my favorites of the night.
Bryce Dallas Howard attends the 21st Annual Critics' Choice Awards at Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California, on Jan. 17, 2016.
Best Action Actress nominee Bryce Dallas Howard (Jurassic World)
My Take: I love this! It really does make her look like a star. LOL Puns. She pulls off the neckline, has great complimentary accessories & makeup. I think I'd preferred her hair down with such a plunging neckline however.
Mayim Bialik arrives at the 21st Annual Critics' Choice Awards at Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California, on Jan. 17, 2016.
Best Supporting Actress TV Comedy Winner Mayim Bialik ("Big Bang Theory ")
My Take: I'm not sure if she's stuck to her rules she got from appearing on What Not To Wear. The color is nice and it brings in her waist, but it seems made for either a young girl or an older woman. The train also makers her look very short. Her hair needs a fancy updo at least. This is very underwhelming.
Jennifer Jason Leigh attends the 21st Annual Critics' Choice Awards at Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California, on Jan. 17, 2016.
Best Supporting Actress nominee Jennifer Jason Leigh (The Hateful Eight)
My Take: I almost didn't recognize her. Not crazy about her hair and the makeup is underwhelming , but the dress is cute.  It's not a wow, and I feel like it needs a bit of edge. It's OK.
Maura Tierney attends the 21st Annual Critics' Choice Awards at Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California, on Jan. 17, 2016.
Best Supporting Actress TV Drama nominee Maura Tierney ("The Affair ")
My Take: A tank and a wrinkly skirt plus undone hair. She just won a Golden Globe, you think she'd prepare to win. It doesn't fit, go, or flatter. All wrong.
Marisa Tomei attends the 21st Annual Critics' Choice Awards at Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California, on Jan. 17, 2016.
Best Guest Actress TV nominee Marisa Tomei ("Empire")
My Take: This doesn't seem special enough for a nominee. It also looks a little young and the placement of the pattern is weird. It's like the designer ran out of red to cover up the skirt so it just got left off. Her hair is also undone. This would be cute on someone much younger for a different awards show.
Constance Zimmer attends the 21st Annual Critics' Choice Awards at Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California, on Jan. 17, 2016.
Best Supporting Actress TV Winner Constance Zimmer ("Unreal")
My Take: I love this! It's appropriate for this awards show, it has great movement, and it makes her look super cute & young.
Shiri Appleby attends the 21st Annual Critics' Choice Awards at Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California, on Jan. 17, 2016.
Best TV Actress Drama nominee Shiri Appleby ("Unreal")
My Take: The neckline is flattering and I love the color, but the pleats and length add bulk. It also doesn't seem special enough for an nominee nor reflective of the show she was in. This isn't dramatic enough or sexy.
Gina Rodriguez arrives at the 21st Annual Critics' Choice Awards at Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California, on Jan. 17, 2016.
Best Actress Comedy nominee Gina Rodriguez ("Jane the Virgin")
My Take: She looks like a Mother of the Bride. It's the cut, color, and hairstyle all mixed together that do this. Any of those things by itself, fine. But all 3 is matronly. It seems some modernity.
Mary J. Blige attends the 21st Annual Critics' Choice Awards at Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California, on Jan. 17, 2016.
Best Supporting Made-TV Movie/Limited Series Actress nominee  Mary J. Blige ("The Wiz Live!")
My Take: Well it's a dramatic dress. I'll give her that. The sheerness is a bit too provocative for this awards show, and the sleeves aren't flattering. Rip those things off and line this better and it would be OK.
Aya Cash attends the 21st Annual Critics' Choice Awards at Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California, on Jan. 17, 2016.
BEST ACTRESS IN A COMEDY SERIES Aya Cash ("You're the Worst")
My Take: I like that it doesn't take itself too seriously. I just wish the pants were longer and the jacket was more tailored.
Rachel Bloom arrives at the 21st Annual Critics' Choice Awards at Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California, on Jan. 17, 2016.
BEST ACTRESS IN A COMEDY SERIES Winner Rachel Bloom ("Crazy Ex-Girlfriend")
My Take: She is killing it on the red carpet! This is appropriate for the awards show, looks amazing on her, stands out from the g=crowd of dress like a winner should, & is well-styled.
Constance Wu arrives at the 21st Annual Critics' Choice Awards at Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California, on Jan. 17, 2016.
BEST ACTRESS IN A COMEDY SERIES nominee Constance Wu ("Fresh Off the Boat")
My Take: I love a dramatic cape, but this overwhelms her petite frame and doesn't seem fun enough to celebrate her role
Judith Light arrives at the 21st Annual Critics' Choice Awards at Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California, on Jan. 17, 2016.
BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS IN A COMEDY SERIES Judith Light ("Transparent")
My Take: Women over a certain age need only to worry about fit & color. The skirt seems a bit bulky, and though I like the navy on her, the black is stark against her hair & skin. I love her hair, but her eye makeup is a little dark.
Wendi McLendon-Covey arrives at the 21st Annual Critics' Choice Awards at Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California, on Jan. 17, 2016.
BEST ACTRESS IN A COMEDY SERIES nominee Wendi McLendon-Covey ("The Goldberg's")
My Take: She looks amazing! She's gotten herself in amazing shape. She looks like a bombshell, and it's still appropriate for this awards show. No need for something OTT when you look like Marylin.
Margo Martindale arrives at the 21st Annual Critics' Choice Awards at Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California, on Jan. 17, 2016.
Best Guest Actress in a Drama Winner Margo Martindale ("The Good Wife")
My Take: OK the color is not flattering nor is the fit right. The pants are too short, the way-to-flowy cardigan too long. I like the accessories (necklace & clutch) and her makeup. I wish she would've worn her hair up or straightened it. It's just a dated hairstyle.
Sarah Hay arrives at the 21st Annual Critics' Choice Awards at Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California, on Jan. 17, 2016.
BEST ACTRESS IN A MOVIE MADE FOR TELEVISION OR LIMITED SERIES nominee Sarah Hay ("Flesh and Bone")
My Take: Neck up this is great. I don't like the accessories paired with this green dress. The dress itself has a slit that's too high for this awards show in a color that washes her out.
Diane Warren arrives at the 21st Annual Critics' Choice Awards at Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California, on Jan. 17, 2016.
Best Song co-nominee Diane Warren (The Hunting Ground)
My Take: This is fine, but not very dressed up for a nominee. I really can't tell what that shirt's pattern is or if it has something to do with the documentary this song was written for. Not terrible but not crazy about it either.
Cherry Jones arrives at the 21st Annual Critics' Choice Awards at Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California, on Jan. 17, 2016.
BEST GUEST ACTOR/ACTRESS IN A COMEDY SERIES nominee Cherry Jones ("Transparent")
My Take: Doesn't fit nor flatter. She looks like a priest. All I can see are her glasses.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS nominee Rooney Mara (Carol)
My Take: It's hard to see all of this. I think it's a bit too edgy for this show, but I like her makeup & hair. I just wish she wore a cami instead of a bra underneath.

BEST ACTRESS IN A COMEDY SERIES nominee Tracee Ellis Ross ("Black-ish")

My Take: I love this. It's appropriate for both her show and this awards show. It's fun, unique, and well-styled.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS IN A COMEDY SERIES nominee Niecy Nash ("Getting On")
My Take;: Though I love the color and her styling, I don't like the fit on this for her. She has an hourglass shape. This dress doesn't shoe that off.

Attendees & Plus Ones

This 2016 Critics' Choice Awards marked the first year that the prize-fest combined the Critics' Choice Movie Awards and Critics' Choice Television Awards into one glamorous and fun-filled show. Keep reading to see the biggest names in entertainment as they hit the red carpet on their way to the Jan. 17, 2016, telecast slated to air simultaneously on A&E, Lifetime and the Lifetime Movie Network... starting with <a href="http://www.wonderwall.com/movies/Jennifer-Aniston-305.celebrity">Jennifer Aniston</a> and husband Justin Theroux, who struck a pose as they arrived at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California...
Jennifer Aniston with her Best Actor TV Drama hubby Justin Theroux ("The Leftovers")
My Take: This dress is wearing her. The color doesn't work for Winter, the slit is too high and not appropriate for  this occasion, & the fit is unflattering & messy. I can't see her shape, the neckline shape is wrong for her bust, and I can see wrinkles in the dress. The makeup and shoes are nice, but the hair, although well highlighted, is plain and I see no accessories to beef this up a notch.

<a href="http://www.wonderwall.com/movies/Rosie-Huntington-Whiteley-1386.celebrity">Rosie Huntington-Whiteley</a> attends the 21st Annual Critics' Choice Awards at Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California, on Jan. 17, 2016.
Plus One Rosie Huntington-Whiteley
My Take: Not very many people can pull off an asymmetrical vneck so well. She looks amazing and really matches her fiance Jason Statham of Spy. She looks like a bond girl.
America Ferrera attends the 21st Annual Critics' Choice Awards at Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California, on Jan. 17, 2016.
TV's America Ferrera of "Superstore"
MY Take: Finally some sex appeal. This is sexy but still classy and flattering. I love her hair. Not usually a fan of platforms but it works on her and with this dress.
Leslie Mann and director Judd Apatow attend the 21st Annual Critics' Choice Awards at Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California, on Jan. 17, 2016.
Plus-One Leslie Mann
My Take: Not many women can pull off a princess seam. Leslie can. It's not my favorite seam for anyone in their 40's, but she has a body that can pull off anything. It's super cute & fun, a perfect compliment to Trainwreck nominated director hubby Judd Apatow.
Samantha Harris arrives at the 21st Annual Critics' Choice Awards at Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California, on Jan. 17, 2016.
Red Carpet Live Host Samantha Harris
My Take: This woman is so pretty, but she this makes her look older. I think it;s the hair. The outfit is great, but not for this awards show or her job. She's a reporter, not an actress attending the show. She's working. If this was a long dress and not a 2 piece crop top skirt combo than that would've been perfect with a younger hairstyle.
Kate Gorney and host T.J. Miller attend the 21st Annual Critics' Choice Awards at Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California, on Jan. 17, 2016.
Kate Gorney-Miller, wife of CCA Host T.J. Miller
My Take: She's so pretty. This dress is soo distracting. The sheerness on the top makes it more suitable for the MTV Movie Awards than the CCA. I love the color though and would've loved this if it was just all a long velvet bright dress against that red hair.

Best
Krysten Ritter arrives at the 21st Annual Critics' Choice Awards at Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California, on Jan. 17, 2016.
