Jack the Giant Slayer 2013 Director: Bryan Singer. Stars: Nicholas Hoult, Stanley Tucci, Ewan McGregor, Bill Nighy Plot: The ancient war between humans and a race of giants is reignited when Jack (Hoult), a young farmhand fighting for a kingdom and the love of a princess, opens a gateway between the two worlds. Trailer Review: I love fairy tales. Acting them out was the first acting I ever did before I even knew what it was. Recently, I saw Hoult in Warm Bodies. Such a great actor. Looking forward to this. One caveat: Why does the 2 headed giant look like the creature in 300? Rating: TBD. Watch with: TBD.

Stoker 2013 Director: Chan-wook Park (Old Boy) Stars: Mia Wasikowska, Nicole Kidman, Matthew Goode, Dermot Mulroney Plot: After India's (Wasikowska) father (Mulroney) dies, her Uncle Charlie (Goode), who she never knew existed, comes to live with her and her unstable mother (Kidman). She comes to suspect this mysterious, charming man has ulterior motives and becomes increasingly infatuated with him. Trailer Review: This movie looks strange & creepy. Right up my alley lol. I'm really loving all this new work from Kidman. She's choosing some really interesting stuff. Won't be too long now for another Oscar nom me thinks. Nice to see Goode in a role he can actually act in & not just look good in. I'm getting a modern Hamlet vibe from this. Can't wait! Rating: TBD. Watch with: TBD.

The Brass Teapot 2012 Director: Ramaa Mosley. Stars: Juno Temple, Michael Angarano, Alexis Bledel When a couple (Temple & Angarano) discovers that a brass teapot makes them money whenever they hurt themselves, they must come to terms with how far they are willing to go. Trailer  Review: So I recently met the father of one of the producers in this movie. It's pretty great to know that someone from Minot ND (My hubby & I currently live on Minot AFB) of all places not only started up his own production company (Northern Lights which produces out of here, CA, & more) but is also producing really great, high quality films like The Brass Teapot. Yes, Middle GA Talent friends, that is the meeting I was referring to earlier. Even if I never get to work with him, at least I know that some great talent can come out of Minot. To be added to the roster of Wiz Khalifa & Josh Duhamel. Hope to be added to that list soon lol. Now to the review: This movie was a darkly comic, sometimes disturbing & often funny morality tale about the love of money being the root of all evil. I loved everything about this film until the ending. This film was well-produced, well-acted, funny, & smart. The ending was mostly good. It's just the last tiny scene right before the credits that ruined it for me in some ways. Here is an indie flick talking about the importance of the people in your life & love & how the love of money can corrupt that. They sold you this idea in a clever, funny, not -spoon-fed way. Then what do they do? Basically imply that true happiness comes from having children and that you're selfish if you don't. That wasn't really a spoiler I promise. I though this was supposed to be an indie film-where the idea of being a married couple doesn't automatically come with children. It's a couple's choice. It's not right for all couples or all families. I'm really disappointed that it had that kind of dated thinking right at the end of a fantastic indie film.  Rating: Noteworthy with a Stamped Out Final Scene. Watch with: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind & Heathers.

"Web Therapy" S2 Stars: Lisa Kudrow, Dan Bucatinsky, Victor Garber, Jennifer Elise Cox Plot:The popular online show, now a television series, features Fiona Wallice who is branching into a new type of therapy. She decides that 3 minutes over web cam is better than 50 minutes of patients rambling on. Trailer Review: I'm on episode 6 of S2. I love this show, add I'm so glad it got picked up by Showtime. Gives me hope for my web-series lol. This show is largely improvised. For any Lisa Kudrow naysayers out there, this should change your mind about her. It's also great seeing the guest stars every week and seeing if they can keep up with Kudrow. Rating: So far I'd say this show is Epic! It's done so much for web series. It's also very smart & very well-acted. Watch with: "Friends" & "The Comeback"

Quartet 2012 Director: Dustin Hoffman Stars: Maggie Smith, Michael Gambon, Billy Connolly Plot: At a home for retired musicians, the annual concert to celebrate Verdi's birthday is disrupted by the arrival of Jean, an eternal diva (Smith) and the former wife of one of the residents. Trailer  Review: This movie is probably my fate, what with men usually dying before women. Sorry honey. After such time, I shall join the likes of other old has-beens at the musician retirement home. Sounds like college all over again, except I'll be able to take my hearing aid out whether people get too noisy. Curious to see Hoffman at the helm. Wondering if any of these actors can really sing. Rating: TBD. Watch with: TBD.

The Last Exorcism Part II (2013) Director: Ed Gass-Donnelly Stars: Ashley Bell, Spencer Treat Clark As Nell Sweetzer (Bell) tries to build a new life after the events of the first movie, the evil force that once possessed her returns with an even more horrific plan. Trailer Review: I was disappointed with the ending of the first film. I'm curious as to what really happened at the end. Hopefully this one will have an actual ending.  Rating: TBD. Watch with: TBD.

American Mary 2012 Plot: A disillusioned medical student (Katharine Isabelle) becomes an underground surgeon specializing in body modification in this disturbing horror yarn Trailer Review: This movie looks twisted. It fascinates me why people do the things they do. This movie deals with underground plastic surgery, except people are asking for things a normal plastic surgeon would never agree to. Sounds like an episode of "Nip/Tuck" to me. Rating: TBD. Watch with: TBD.

Movie 43 2013 Directors: Peter Farrelly, Brett Ratner, James Gunn and Steve Carr. Cast: Hugh Jackman, Naomi Watts, Gerard Butler, Kate Winslet, Chloë Grace Moretz, Liev Schreiber, Terrence Howard, and Richard Gere. Plot: Anarchic, anything-goes comedy that shatters the boundaries of good taste Trailer  Review: I love anthology films. There seem to be some good directors here & a great cast. Let's see if the individual segments can connect together in a full story.  Rating: TBD. Watch with: TBD.

Fashion Star S2 Ep9 Trending Now-and-Then

The remaining 4 designers must take a dated trend and transform it into a fresh and current look & create 2 items each.
Pictures credits given to: http://www.jessicasimpson.com , http://nbcfashionstar.tumblr.com/, NBC.com, Instyle.com

Host

Stunning. Love this look from H2T.

Judges

Jessica

Look 1: Not a fan of high necklines on busty women.
Look 2: I love the neckline & cut on her. Makes her waist look tiny & takes advantage of her ahem assets. Not crazy about her obvious extensions though. They make her look like a cast member of Dynasty. Great makeup tho!

Nicole

Cute polka dot top that doesn't really seem to be in keeping with Nicole's usual style. I also prefer her hair down to up. Up dos make her look too young IMO.

Buyers

Express

Love that neon pop on the screen. Makeup is fresh & light. Hair is a bit messy tho.

Designers
Which designers will make it to the final three? Find out tonight at 8/7c!
Daniel looking great but maybe a bit too casual for the show. Jessie Ray & Garrett looking more like bankers than designers. Hunter looking chic as usual, but I wish she would do something else with her hair. Cassandra for one at least has something going for her in an outfit-those shoes! She dresses like Ally Sheedy pre-makeover in The Breakfast Club. Not a compliment. Designers should really dress according to their design aesthetic.

Looks

Daniel
Inspiration: 60's
Tonight is all about reinvention, and the designers will have to modernize a vintage look!
Skirt rejected.
I think this was a cute skirt, but it didn't seem very Daniel to me.

Sold! Buy now at Saks for $250 & $280-
This is what I'm talking about. Go Daniel! He even hand cut this design himself.

Hunter
Inspiration: 60's

Striped version on left Rejected
I'm wishing these "trends" were a little more specific. It seems like the designers just made whatever they wanted & then assigned the closest decade that most resembles the outfit. Cop out!
I love that striped version. IDK why they didn't sell it in that print/color.

Sold. Buy now at Saks for $280
I like this too. I love the cut.

Yellow version Rejected. Blue version Sold! Buy now at Express for $69.90. Also in Black.
I like this because of those unique pocket peplums. Very clever.

JesseRay & Garrett
Inspiration: 50's

Crop top & shorts sold to Macys for $49 &$59
I really wish they had used the polka dot fabric. I don't like the yellow print. It seems too junior to me. The b&w is chicer, but I wish those shorts were a high waist. It would make it classier.

Sold! Buy now at Saks for $240
Love this! Very Mad Men. That print is fab.

Cassandra
Inspiration: 60's
From the runway to your closet, the winning looks from tonight’s episode can now be yours.
Sold to Express for $98
Very cute. Love the print with that column silhouette & that collar.

Red Version at right Rejected
I liked the print. IDK why it was rejected.

Version on left Rejected
I liked the print here too.

Sold to Macys Buy now for $79
Love this. It's like a tennis dress you can wear in real life.

Sent home

Though I liked the Mad Men dress, I agree with the buyer's decision. It's taken them this long (& there's 2 of them) to figure out their aesthetic. And they were still having problems. They're not formally trained though and have only been doing this for 4 years so kudos for making it this far. Can't wait to see what they do in the future.

[DVD] Tuesdays with Mell 4/23/13 Gangster Squad & Promised Land

Image of Gangster SquadImage of Mr SelfridgeImage of Promised LandImage of Pawn
Image of Any Day NowImage of Family WeekendImage of Flirt

Gangster Squad Stars: Sean Penn, Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone, Giovanni Ribisi Plot: Los Angeles, 1949: A secret crew of police officers led by two determined sergeants (Gosling & Josh Brolin) work together in an effort to take down the ruthless mob king Mickey Cohen (Penn) who runs the city. Trailer Review: This looks like a throw back gangster flick with a slick, modern sheen. Curious if Emma Stone can play the femme fatale character. Always like Gosling. We will see. Rating: TBD. Watch with: TBD.

"Mr Selfridge"  Stars: Jeremy Piven Plot: PBS TV Show centers on the real-life story of the flamboyant and visionary American founder of Selfridge's (Piven), London's department store. Trailer Review: I love Selfridge's. I went when I toured in London. I'm interested to see how this store came about, and more anxious to see if Piven can actually act in a period series without seeming too modern. Rating: TBD. Watch with: TBD.

Promised Land Director: Gus Van Sant Stars: Matt Damon, Frances McDormand, John Krasinski, Hal Holbrook Plot: A salesman (Damon) for a natural gas company experiences life-changing events after arriving in a small town, where his corporation wants to tap into the available resources.   Trailer Review: I always like Damon, and even though this film seems like an anti-oil propaganda film, I'm still interested in seeing it because I care about the environment, & I have seen problems with oil companies (hello BP oil spill). I will, however, fact check some stuff after the film is over. Rating: TBD. Watch with: TBD.

Pawn Stars: Ray Liotta, Nikki Reed, Forest Whitaker Plot: A petty robbery spirals into a tense hostage situation after three gunmen hold up a diner that's a front for the mob. Trailer  Review: This could either be a tense thriller or a complete mess. Great cast though. Rating: TBD. Watch with: TBD.

Any Day Now Starring: Alan Cumming  Plot: In the 1970s, a gay couple (Cumming) fights a biased legal system to keep custody of the abandoned mentally handicapped teenager that comes to live under their roof. Trailer Review: Apparently based on a true story, this looks like a well-acted, inspirational story that's gonna start some discussions & press some buttons. Ahh what good films are made of. Rating: TBD. Watch with: TBD.

Family Weekend Stars: Kristin Chenoweth, Matthew Modine, Olesya Rulin  Plot: A 16-year-old girl (Rulin) takes her parents (Chenoweth & Modine) hostage after they miss her big jump-roping competition. Trailer Review: Reminiscent of House Arrest, I like the idea of teenagers letting their parents know they've screwed up in a non-homicidal kind of way, though I know kidnapping is wrong, but anyways. Rating: TBD. Watch with: TBD.

Flirt Stars: Parker Posey, Robert John Burke, Martin Donovan. Plot: The same situation is played out in different cities (New York, Berlin and Japan). A lover has to choose whether to commit to a partner who is returning home. In each case there are other people involved  Trailer Review: Originally released in 1995, this is finally on DVD & seems like an interesting story line though it may end up being really depressing. Rating: TBD. Watch with: TBD.
